The Green Cement Project

Energy Manufacturing Mineral Development Climate & Environment Pilot
Description

The Green Cement Project at Eco Concrete Ltd develops low carbon binder systems for Africa based on two innovations: a Limestone–Pozzolana–Gypsum blend inspired by Roman cements, and geopolymer binders formed from volcanic and clay rich alumino silicate materials. Both systems use local Ugandan minerals and rely on natural pozzolanic and geopolymer reactions instead of high temperature clinker burning. By drastically reducing embodied energy, they cut the biggest cost driver in traditional cement production on the continent. This allows Eco Concrete Ltd to deliver affordable, high performance cement alternatives that are better suited to African economic and environmental realities.

Impact

The Green Cement Project is being implemented in Rubanda District in partnership with the 800-member Rwesingye Cooperative Society, ensuring that local communities directly participate in the value chain of low carbon cement production. By using Rubanda’s own volcanic minerals, the project creates rural industrial jobs, builds technical skills, and keeps economic value within the community. The affordable binders produced will support the development of functional rural homesteads, enabling families to build durable, safe and energy-efficient homes using materials from their own soil. This model turns a rural cooperative into an industrial partner and sets the foundation for self-sustaining village economies across the highlands.
